Product Review: Wanchai Ferry Beef & Broccoli + GIVEAWAY!

Raise your hand if you love take-out! I know I do and although I don't indulge in it anywhere near as often as I used to, it's still a nice treat from time to time. The only un-fun part about the whole thing is the price. Take-out & delivery food is just NOT affordable, what with the minimum order amount, the delivery fees, and the tips. When all is said and done, even if you're ordering for two, you can still end up spending around $30 for the whole meal (though, you can always find ways to stretch that out as I've shown you in the past). Sure, you can always learn from Poor Girl and make your own fun take-out style meals, but there are just some days when even my simple recipes can seem like a chore. What to do, what to do?

Enter Wanchai Ferry. The fine folks at MyBlogSpark.com contacted me awhile ago to let me know that this brand had just launched their latest frozen dinner: Beef & Broccoli. Aside from Sweet & Sour Pork, I'm fairly certain this is one of the most popular Chinese take-out items ordered. And seriously, what's not to like? Chunks of tender beef, lots of broccoli, that sauce... it's pretty much a winner for me, too. So I was definitely curious to see if a frozen dinner could match up to my local Chinese restaurants' beef & broccoli and agreed to give Wanchai Ferry's dinner a go.

Now, you all know how I feel about pre-made frozen dinners in general: fun, tasty, convenient but definitely something you could make yourself for less money! But I know that's not always possible for some folks. My other issue with them is that when it comes to the Asian-inspired pre-made dinners out there, they don't often end up tasting as good as some of the Italian pasta varieties. I will admit, I was definitely skeptical. But I like it when I'm proven wrong in these instances. Of course, there was plenty of broccoli and some crispy water chestnuts, but I was quite surprised by the amount of beef that was included. Usually in these dinners you get nothing but veggies and maybe a few cubes of beef - and that goes for take-out, too! It was nice to see that they didn't skimp on the good stuff. There was also a generous amount of pre-cooked rice to go along with everything, and even without a microwave I was able to heat it up easily. But what really impressed me was the sauce: not too salty and definitely in the restaurant category when it came to its consistency. And there was plenty of it, too! That impressed me again, as you're usually struggling to find the sauce in some of those frozen dinners. The whole meal took just under the quoted 14 minutes to prepare and it was very tasty. And at just around $7 for two people, it's definitely more affordable than take-out!

  6. Pepper beef! A local Japanese steakhouse (which also does Chinese food, because it's a small city) has this really good pepper beef - even their lunch version, which is $7, is big enough for two meals.

  12. Potstickers and a good Yang Chow fried rice are my two faves. Though, to be honest, I hardly ever do Chinese take out. I make a really delicious, much healthier and much cheaper chicken fried rice myself at home (and I usually make TONS and freeze it in convenient dinner sized portions for later use, so it's actually even quicker and more convenient than take out). But if I go out for Chinese it's usually for dim sum... mmmmm one of my favourite treats!

  13. My fave takeout item is Mongolian Chicken; my next fave would have to be Egg Foo Yung--House special (blend of chicken, shrimp, pork, etc). And have to have egg rolls, lol...and fried rice (again, House Special); oh, and an order of steamed veggies, no sauce!!

    I'm intrigued by Wanchai Ferry; I don't buy any kind of chinese meals from the supermarket; if I'm going to have Chinese, I pay for take out, and order enough dishes to last me for a week of meals; if I spend $40 but it lasts me a whole week, I don't feel quite so guilty about splurging on it a few times a year.

    but the ONE thing I cannot resist no matter what is eggrolls. Yeah, I know.

  20. Hard to choose ... Singapore noodles and Mongolian pork are both so good! I've been eyeballing these Wanchai Ferry meals for a while, but am gun-shy since my last disastrous encounter with frozen Oriental food. Thanks for reviewing - I think I may give it a try now!

  30. Empress Chicken is my fav!! It's kinda hard to find....not all Chinese restaurants have it. It has a wonderful sweet red sauce....watch out for the "hot" peppers tho.

  36. I haven't done chinese take out in a looong time. I'm a PG trying to EW. When I think of getting some though, my mouth definitely waters for crab rangoon and this lemon fish dish at a chinese restaurant in Charlotte, NC.

  48. Mu Shu! Ilove it and i remember the first time i had it at a friend's house. I refused to try it (on account of all the "weird" cabbage" and then my friend's mom goes "think of it as a Chinese Taco". Who DOESN'T love tacos?!? I was sold. And once the wrappers are done plop over rice and it goes for another day. I also love crab ragoon but i stopped ordering it once i realized how simple it is to make!

  54. There is a small Chinese food restaurant near my house that specializes in vegetarian foods and every time I go I always get the Vegan chicken with broccoli. SO GOOD. However, my favorite dish that I can usually get from ANY Chinese restaurant is Bean Curd Homestyle. Bean curd is another name for tofu! Delicious!

  62. Mapo doufu; hot and spicy tofu sometimes with pork, sometimes without, but when it's so spicy it makes your eyes burn to look at it, it's PERFECT!!!
